Kapow holy credit crunch, vat bills, valuations and others

September 22, 2008

A COMIC shop is having £325,000 worth of stock sold at auction after being hit by the credit crunch.

The Comic Guru Presents was visited by bailiffs in June after running up debts of £22,000.

While the store is keen to point out that it is not closing, next week 44,000 collectible items will go under the hammer at Newport Auctions.

Thousands of comics, including valuable first editions, are likely to go to the highest bidder for a fraction of their normal market value.

Collectible memorabilia is also being sold off from comics like Spiderman, TV shows such as Doctor Who and films including Star Wars.

Owner Kristian Barry will have been running his shop in Cardiff’s Wyndham Arcade for five years on October 4, which is his birthday.

The 36-year-old complained the number of shoppers had dropped dramatically since work began on the nearby St David’s 2 development in 2007.

He said: “It was not so bad until David Morgan closed. Then business dropped off. If it was not for my website, I would not have been able to carry on after that point.”

Mr Barry is determined to get through his problems.

He said: “I’m not going anywhere, I refuse to give in. What has happened is not my fault.

“You could say a lot of what has happened is down to inexperience. But how can you predict a collapse in the international credit markets?”

The stock will be sold next Tuesday.

Mr Barry has been arguing with the Inland Revenue that his business rates should be cut because of the effect of the St David’s 2 project.

In a letter from Cardiff’s Valuation Office, valuation officer Peter Grant said his request would be considered.

HM Customs and Revenue, which includes the Valuation Office, was unavailable for comment.

Butchers View: Well having heard all kinds of excuses I can only conclude that the comic guru has brought this on himself. Over the years varying excuses for late deliverys or no deliverys have been.

A personal vendetta with the Delivery Driver ( would that be TNT for vendetta)

a vendetta with a member of the bank staff (would that be teller for vendetta)

Flood Damage

Fire Damage

Diamond hasn’t delivered

Diamonds delivery late

and now it’s the vat man/taxman (holy tax bill vatman, you have a vendetta against me, vat for vendetta)

it’s a pity as a person the comic guru is a great guy as a business man he fails to realise that people talk to each other so we hear 7 different stories for each one he gives us. Perhaps whoever stole his cloak should return it as his powers seem to have gone without it
